The Inside Scoop on Outside Lands

Grab a blanket, your kids, an eco-friendly water bottle and your best hippie outfit, and make your way to Golden Gate Park for Outside Lands, San Francisco's favorite annual music festival. Established in 2008, Outside Lands is but a baby compared to more well-known festivals.

The Inside Scoop on Outside Lands

When it comes to music, San Franciscans know what they're doing. Give us three days and a massive park, and we'll give you a dance-inducing, all-out-grooving, we-don't-even-need-the-boozing (but we'll take it anyway) weekend of awesome. In 2011, Outside Lands is jamming out to musical phenomena like Phish, Muse, Arcade Fire, MGMT, The Shins, The Roots and Josh Ritter. And like the vastness of the Pacific Ocean just west of the gorgeous leafy-green venue, the list of rockin' bands goes on and on and on.

If you love booze, specifically California wines, head over to Wine Lands for a variety of delicious tastings from an amazing group of featured wineries. With local favorites like Gloria Ferrer, Hess and the boutique Rock Wall Wine Company, enjoy good tunes with a glass of exquisite wine in your hand. When the little kid tripping over Mommy's empty wine bottle starts to make you giggle a little too loudly, get some food in that stomach. Luckily for you, Outside Lands has a mouth-watering and eclectic setup of delicious options. Grab a grilled cheese at the American Grilled Cheese Kitchen, or the best burrito in San Francisco (and in our opinion, the world) from Gordo. Everything edible here is good. We mean it. Everything.

In addition to sound waves, Outside Lands also generates fantastic eco-friendly vibes. Setting up shop in GGP's Speedway Meadow, Eco Lands implements creative approaches to conservation. For example, the Panhandle Stage is powered entirely by solar energy. That's right, those bright lights and big sounds will be the sole product of the sunshine's glorious rays. The Refillable Water Program is another key component to reducing waste. If you purchase a stainless steel Outside Lands water bottle, or have one from a previous year, you'll get free refills of spring water for the entire festival. Bring your own canteen, and you'll have to pay for refills, but at a significantly lower cost than a plastic bottle of Evil, er, Evian. Plastic bottle consumption dropped by 60% in 2010, and the festival is anticipating even more impressive numbers this year.

Buy a ticket now, they're running out fast, and make your way to the City by the Bay for Outside Lands, August 12-14.

What: A weekend of dance-gasms, wine-gasms, and food-gasms
