Outdoor Activities in San Francisco

Jun 2 , 2011

Sun in San Francisco isn't always guaranteed. But fog or shine, you won't convince the locals to stay indoors and neither should you. Explore the city with these outdoor activities in San Francisco, and gear up for an exciting trip. Happy trails!

Hiking through Muir Woods to Stinson Beach

You've already digested amazing local cuisine, and you're ready to burn off those calories. Do it by hiking the Dipsea Trail, one of the most rejuvenating and sweat-inducing outdoor activities in San Francisco.

Begin your journey at the redwood forest of Muir Woods National Monument, where some of these massive trees have lived for over 1,200 years. Ask a friendly ranger or follow signs to the 9.5-mile Dipsea Trail, a hike that will give you a stunning taste of Bay Area scenery. It will guide you through dense forests to impeccable beaches, and it's certainly worth the sweat!

Follow the Dipsea past steep stairs and an oak grove, where you'll emerge onto Highway 1. Continue down the road a few more minutes until you hit the beautiful Stinson Beach. Relax with a book, play in the sand, swim in the Pacific, and drink in the best of coastal California landscapes. Grab a bite at one of the local restaurants and beach cafes, and after you've had enough sun, head back into the shade of thousand-year-old trees for the trek home.

A picnic on the Marina Green

Views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz are two of many reasons to pack a picnic, grab some kites, and head to Marina Green in San Francisco. Packed with friends, Frisbees, dogs, and impromptu soccer games, the Marina Green is an idyllic and active spot on the edge of the city. Breathe fresh air deeply into your lungs while the city buzzes around you. A short drive from Ghiradeli Square and Hyatt at Fisherman's Wharf, and just a minute's walk from the Exploratorium and the Presidio, it's a rejuvenating outdoor activity in San Francisco for the entire family.

Stroll, bike, and paddle through Golden Gate Park

One of the most beautiful parks in the country, Golden Gate Park has some of the most enjoyable outdoor activities in San Francisco, including fun for kids, great food, and amazing art. An easy ride from downtown, ask the concierge at Parc 55 Wyndham for simple directions by Muni or car.

Start at the top of the Park, right off the Panhandle. Head west toward Ocean Beach, but before you arrive on those sandy shores, there are a series of phenomenal attractions to see. Check out one of the best museums in San Francisco: the California Academy of Sciences for unparalleled fun and education for the whole family, including a planetarium, aquarium, and indoor rainforest.

Then, make your way to the Japanese Tea Garden and wander through the serene setting before sipping on some of the most authentic, delicious tea this side of the Pacific. Rent a paddleboat at Stowe Lake with your friends and go for a twirl around Strawberry Hill, noting the Japanese pagoda on the water. If you're not the pond-faring sort, grab a two-person bicycle instead and cruise around San Francisco's leafy green wonderland.

Continue west on John F. Kennedy Drive to the Bison Paddock, where in the middle of this gorgeous city, you'll have the surreal opportunity to watch bison roam. Keep your compass pointed west until you reach the Dutch Windmill, also known as Murphy's Windmill, which sits aside the blossoming beauty of the Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden. Make your final stop the Beach Chalet Brewery and Restaurant, right on the edge of GGP. If it's nice, spread out a blanket and sit outside at Park Chalet, or head upstairs to watch the sunset over the Pacific. Golden Gate Park offers a full, glorious day of outdoor activities in San Francisco, and although your feet will be tired, your soul will be invigorated.

Architecture in the City: the Victorian Home Walk

If you're blown away by the stunning architecture of SF favorites like Grace Cathedral on Nob Hill, just across the street from The Huntington Hotel, than hop in a cab and head for Pacific Heights. On the Victorian Home Walk, a knowledgeable, amiable tour guide will lead you past gorgeous Queen Anne, Italianate, and Stick-Style homes in San Francisco.

The walk is $25 per person, but well worth the educational experience and the amazing views you'll witness. You'll have a chance to see the famous houses on Alamo Square (think the picnic from the TV show "Full House"), and even the residence from Robin Williams' "Mrs. Doubtfire." Aside from seeing the beauty of Union Square, Cow Hollow, and Pacific Heights (the last two locations don't allow bus tours, so this tour is a fabulous opportunity!), you'll have a chance to catch some of the most gorgeous views San Francisco has to offer, including Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge.
